The Editor, Sir:JAMAICA IS a class-prejudiced country and its divide is getting increasingly serious and dangerous each day.
Every government that Jamaica has had for the past 49 years has failed to attack the crime issue in a very serious way. They believe that forming new police squads will solve the problem. They fail to realise that you first have to find out the causes, especially for the very serious gun crimes in Jamaica today.
For example, the rich and powerful in Jamaica don't give the police information about some very serious criminal activities that some rich and powerful people are involved in. Second, the police don't give the Police High Command information about crimes other police officers are involved in.
I have to ask why the police and the rich people think that the poor people should give the police information about crimes that are committed by other poor people, keeping in mind the way the police treat the poor people when these people are in their custody.
Abolish the Island Special Constabulary Force
I, once again, call on the Government of Jamaica to abolish the Island Special Constabulary Force and to have one police force in Jamaica. Enlist those members who are qualified to be members of the regular police force, carrying with them their length of service and their present rank. I believe we should also discontinue the special district constable, because some of them are likely to carry confidential police information to dangerous criminals who live in the same communities.
I am, etc.,
