THE CLASH of toddlers in the 50 cc Baby Class will highlight today's go-kart race meet at the Palisadoes International Raceway, Kingston.
Battling for supremacy will be Senna Summerbell, Justin Sirgany and Mark Anthony Eaton.
According to reports from the Jamaica Karting Association (JKA), seven-year-old Eaton is leading on 547 points, closely followed by the two six-year-olds, Senna and Sirgany, on 539 and 538 points, respectively.
"All the karters in the 50 cc Class will be competing on a level playing field. The engines are the same, nobody has any advantage. All the engines are maintained by the JKA," said Neil Williams, president of the JKA.
Upsetting the apple cart
He said on race days all the competitors have to do is select an engine, and the rest is left up to the drivers' ability and the capability of the parent(s) or mechanical crew to properly tune the engine.
"At this age group, there is nothing much we, as parents, can do. We cannot pressure them. What we need to do is let them practise as much as possible, and Senna has been practising," commented David Summerbell, Senna's father.
Eaton has been consistent and needs to finish at least in the top three to cement his hold on the class title. At the summer international meet, Sirgany sprang some surprises, convincing many that he is capable of upsetting the apple cart.
With one race meet remaining before the respective champions are named, the points standings suggest that young Jonathan Law looks likes a winner in the 80 cc Baby Class. Likewise, Peter Moodie Jr, Mario Mair and Colin Daley Jr.
"I am hoping that my nephew, Sebastian, bounces back from his lean spell and come out in flying colours. We are coming to entertain the fans with some good showing," said Peter Rae, who was spotted at the track practising on Thursday.
In recent times, Rae has been involved more in managing his 'Rae Racing Team' than competing.
Promising star
Dane Lawson is one of the promising stars in Rae's camp, and a lot is expected from him today.
Lawson stunned the critics at last meet, coming from the back of the pack to upset the apple cart.
Meanwhile, the contest in the Rotax International Class is between the current leader Sean Jackson and his twin sister, Justine, who is in second place. Both are being chased by Sheldon Morgan.
Philip Myers needs to score enough points to stay ahead of Justin Wong (second place) and third-place Matthew Williams.
